When a previous sauna company failed to deliver, our client turned to Ember & Ice. Working with Auroom, we designed a bespoke hybrid Mira outdoor sauna for their Newmarket garden, combining traditional Finnish heat with infrared recovery in one refined space.

Why hybrid heating matters, what can go wrong with a sauna project, and how we put one right

Every garden has its own logic. Its own light, its own boundaries, its own quiet rhythm through the day. Before we design a single panel of a sauna, our first task is understanding the space it will belong to, and the way our client actually intends to use it.

That question, how will you actually use this, sits at the centre of one of the decisions we’re asked about most often: traditional heat, infrared, or both. It’s worth answering properly, because it shapes everything else about the build.

Traditional, infrared, or hybrid: what’s the real difference

A traditional Finnish sauna heats the air around you, using stones and steam (löyly) to create an intense, enveloping heat that peaks quickly and rewards ritual, water on the stones, quiet conversation, the sound of it hissing off hot rock.

An infrared sauna works differently. Rather than heating the air, infrared panels heat the body directly, at a lower ambient temperature, for longer, gentler sessions that many people find easier to use daily and better suited to recovery, sleep, and everyday nervous system regulation.

Increasingly, our clients don’t want to choose between the two. A hybrid sauna gives you both systems in one space: a traditional heater with heater stones for an authentic, high-heat Finnish session, and infrared panels for a lower, deeper session on the days you want something gentler. It’s the most versatile option we build, and it’s exactly what one recent project in Newmarket, near Cambridge, called for.

What can go wrong with a sauna project

Outdoor wellness structures look simple from the outside: timber, glass, a heater. In practice, they demand precision in engineering, thermal performance, electrical specification, and design judgement, delivered by people who’ve done this properly, at scale, for real gardens and real clients.

It’s a gap we see more often than we’d like. Our client in Newmarket came to us partway through what should have been someone else’s project. A previous sauna company had taken the commission, taken the deposit, and simply stopped delivering. No finished structure, no clear plan, and a growing sense that the vision for the space was slipping away.

If you’re evaluating a sauna company yourself, a few questions are worth asking before you commit: Who manufactures the heating system, and is it specified for your actual usage, not just a showroom demo? Is the structure designed around your garden’s exact dimensions and clearances, or is it a standard size you’re expected to make fit? And critically, who is actually accountable for delivery, start to finish?

Designing with Auroom, for this exact space

We started, as we always do, by listening. What had gone wrong. What still mattered to the client about the original vision. What the space itself could actually support, down to the last centimetre of clearance against the boundary fence.

Our client had also done their own homework. Before we sat down together, they had spent time looking closely at previous Ember & Ice installations, alongside work from other sauna companies they’d found researching online, building a clear sense of the details they wanted to carry through into their own build: the low, architectural roofline, the way glazing could open a structure fully to its garden, the layered warmth of ambient lighting after dark. That reference point mattered. It meant our conversation started from a shared visual language rather than a blank page, and it let us focus our attention on refining the details rather than reintroducing the basics.

Working alongside our long-standing sauna partner Auroom, we developed a bespoke hybrid Mira outdoor sauna, engineered specifically for this plot and this client’s expectations of what a home wellness space should feel like.

The result sits low and confident in the garden, clad in brushed, black-painted thermo spruce that reads as architecture rather than outbuilding. Floor-to-ceiling tempered glazing on two sides opens the interior fully to the garden and the tree line beyond, so the experience of the sauna is inseparable from the experience of the place it sits in.

Inside, thermo aspen panelling and benching carry the warmth of Scandinavian craftsmanship, elevated by a lighting scheme that does real work rather than simply decorating the space. Soft LED strip lighting runs beneath the benches and behind the backrests, washing the timber in a warm, low glow that’s independently adjustable via a Quinetic switch, so the mood can shift from bright and functional to dim and contemplative without leaving the bench. Discreet indicator LED strips are built directly into the infrared backrests themselves, giving a quiet visual cue of the heaters at work. Together, it’s lighting designed the way a good hospitality space is lit: layered, warm, and never harsh enough to compete with the red glow of the heaters themselves.

The hybrid system, in practice

The heart of this build is its hybrid heating system: a HUUM Hive Mini 9kW traditional heater, stacked with heater stones for that authentic Finnish löyly, paired with three Duetto infrared heaters set into the backrest and side panelling.

It means the sauna can be used two ways, a traditional, high-heat Finnish session with steam from water on the stones, or a gentler, deeper infrared session for recovery and everyday use. The whole system is controlled through the HUUM UKU WiFi glass panel, allowing the sauna to be heated and ready before anyone has stepped into the garden.

Beyond the heat, the detail continues: integrated Bluetooth audio through concealed under-bench speakers, a traditional pail, ladle, sand timer and thermo-hygrometer, and a three-phase power specification built for genuine, repeated everyday use, not an occasional novelty.

What it means to get it right

This project was never just about building a sauna. It was about restoring a client’s confidence that a company could actually deliver on what was promised, and then going further, giving them a space considerably more refined than the one they had originally been sold.

That’s the standard we hold ourselves to at Ember & Ice Wellness: wellness proven by science, refined by design, and delivered by people who see a project through from the first difficult conversation to the last stone in the heater.

If you’re weighing up traditional, infrared or hybrid for your own space, or a project has stalled and you want it done properly the first time, we’d be glad to talk it through.

Recovery is now a discipline of its own. How to design a recovery lounge that blends heat, cold, light and calm into one seamless, high-value experience.

The post Thinking About Creating a Recovery Lounge? Do It Right with Ember & Ice appeared first on Ember and Ice.

Recovery was once seen as a pause, a quick stretch or cool-down after training. Today it’s a discipline in its own right. Research in sports science, longevity and performance increasingly shows that recovery has as much impact on results as the workout itself.

That shift has fuelled the rise of the recovery lounge: a dedicated space where people access a full suite of science-backed wellness tools in one seamless journey. Once considered a luxury, recovery lounges are becoming essential in elite sports facilities, boutique gyms, hotels, private residences and wellness clubs.

A recovery lounge isn’t a room full of equipment. It’s an experience, designed.
Ember & Ice Wellness

What is a recovery lounge?

A recovery lounge is not simply a room filled with equipment. It’s a carefully designed environment built around flow, safety and purpose, made to restore balance, build resilience and feel as good as it is effective.

Core modalities:

Heat therapy: Nordic saunas to support circulation and relaxation; infrared cabins for deep, comfortable warmth that supports muscle recovery; and hybrid systems that combine traditional heat and infrared.

Cold therapy: ice baths for a cold reset and resilience; contrast plunges with built-in chillers and heaters for hot/cold switching; and cryotherapy cabins for whole-body cold recovery in minutes.

Light and energy therapies: red light therapy to support cellular energy, ease fatigue and support skin health; and PEMF for cellular-level recovery.

Compression and oxygen: compression boots to support circulation and ease soreness; and hyperbaric oxygen chambers for recovery and mental clarity.

The mindful layer: zones for meditation, stillness or guided breathwork, with lighting, soundscapes and scent to support mood and circadian rhythm.

If you’re going to do it, do it right

Safety and hygiene

Recovery spaces must feel safe, clean and effortless.

Water quality: advanced filtration, UV and micron systems for crystal-clear plunges.

Sanitisation: antimicrobial surfaces and airflow management in saunas and cryo cabins.

Accessibility: steps, rails and safe transitions between hot and cold zones.

Staff training: proper guidance on equipment, safe durations and contraindications.

The member journey

A great recovery lounge is built around flow. Guests should move through the space naturally:

Arrival: a welcoming scent, calming light and clear signage.

Preparation: lockers, robes, hydration.

Recovery circuit: sauna, plunge, rest, repeat, guided by staff or signage.

Integration: quiet zones to extend the benefits afterwards.

The Ember & Ice difference

What sets us apart isn’t just equipment, but design intelligence:

Science-led curation: evidence-informed protocols for performance and recovery.

Luxury finishes: thermo-treated woods, tinted glass, natural stone.

Tailored design: no two lounges are the same; each reflects the client’s brand.

Future-ready: modular, scalable solutions that grow with you.

Why invest in a recovery lounge?

Science meets experience: the evidence supports contrast therapy, red light and compression; combining them creates measurable results in a space that feels like a luxury retreat.

Differentiation: gyms gain a premium membership layer, hotels extend guest dwell time, and residential clients get a professional-grade wellness suite at home.

Revenue and retention: tiered memberships or day passes, pay-per-use sessions, and guided workshops (contrast therapy, breathwork). Members who recover well return more often, stay longer and remain loyal.

Future-proofing: wellness is moving into longevity and lifestyle medicine, and recovery lounges place you at the centre of that shift.

The Ember & Ice approach

We don’t just install equipment, we design a complete experience.

Our process:

Discovery: define goals, users and space.

Concept design: map circuits and zoning.

Technical planning: power, ventilation, drainage, load.

Curation: select the right mix of therapies.

Aesthetics: materials, finishes and lighting.

Implementation: project management, installation and aftercare.

Signature elements:

Contrast circuits: sauna, plunge, rest, repeat.

Ergonomic seating: wave benches for comfort and dwell time.

Mood design: natural textures, calming light and sound.

Smart tech: Wi-Fi sauna controls, app-based scheduling and biometric tracking.

Beyond equipment: a story of renewal

The best lounges don’t just offer recovery tools, they create rituals. From the scent of thermo-aspen wood to the glow of red light, from the shock of cold immersion to the calm of guided breathwork, recovery becomes a journey. That storytelling is what elevates a good lounge into an unforgettable one. At Ember & Ice, we combine science, design and narrative to craft spaces that resonate.

The next step

The question isn’t whether you should create a recovery lounge, but how. Will it be a bold centrepiece, or a private, serene escape? With Ember & Ice, you gain a partner to guide every stage, from consultancy and design to installation and long-term support.

Biohacking is the art and science of optimising your body and mind using evidence-based tools, lifestyle shifts and technology. At its core, it’s about taking a more active role in your own biology, whether that means more energy, faster recovery, sharper focus or supporting long-term wellbeing. It ranges from simple daily habits like nutrition and sleep all the way to advanced tools like cryotherapy cabins and infrared saunas. In short: biohacking is self-experimentation guided by science.

Biohacking isn’t about chasing extremes. It’s about using proven tools to become a stronger, clearer, healthier version of yourself.

Why you’ll want to try it

Unlike fads that over-promise and under-deliver, biohacking leans on research and measurable outcomes. People commonly report:

Better recovery after training or long workdays

Greater stress resilience and improved mood

Support for long-term cellular and metabolic health

For anyone curious about living better, for longer, biohacking offers a practical roadmap.

Who can biohack?

The short answer: anyone. You don’t need to be an elite athlete or a tech founder.

The wellness landscape is changing. Once defined by relaxation and aesthetics, today’s high-performance wellness culture is increasingly grounded in data, biology and measurable outcomes. From elite athletes to entrepreneurs and longevity enthusiasts, the modern client wants more than a moment of calm; they want evidence-informed recovery that supports how the body performs, adapts and recovers. This new wave of wellness is built on biology, not just belief.

Traditional wellness asks how we feel. Science-backed wellness asks how we function.
Ember & Ice Wellness

The rise of science-backed recovery

The link between performance and recovery has been studied for decades. What is new is our growing ability to measure and refine it through tools such as saunas, ice baths, cryotherapy, red light therapy and EWOT (Exercise with Oxygen Therapy). These are no longer confined to sports-science labs; they are being integrated into homes, hotels, clubs and recovery studios across the UK and beyond.

Saunas: the heat of longevity

Research increasingly associates regular sauna use with benefits for circulation, cardiovascular health and relaxation. Infrared and hybrid models, such as the Auroom and Ember and Ice collections, extend these benefits through deeper heat and precise thermal control, bringing the Nordic ritual into the modern wellness era.

Cold therapy: the science of stress adaptation

Exposure to cold triggers hormetic stress, a controlled form of challenge that encourages the body to adapt. Ice baths and contrast baths, like the Björn, Loki, Frode, Thor and Stig, are associated with supporting circulation, easing inflammation and helping regulate mood, building a stronger, calmer, more adaptable physiology over time.

Red light therapy: cellular energy and repair

Red light therapy is associated with supporting mitochondrial energy production (ATP), which may aid muscle recovery, sleep and skin renewal. The E&I Lumina and E&I Glow beds deliver full-spectrum light therapy designed to support recovery at the cellular level.

Cryotherapy: cold at -110°C, precision in every second

With our icepod electric cryotherapy cabins, Ember and Ice brings whole-body cryo into a clean, all-electric format, reaching a true -110°C without gas or nitrogen. Three minutes at -110°C is associated with supporting the body’s anti-inflammatory response, metabolism and mental clarity.

EWOT: oxygen as the missing link in recovery

Exercise with Oxygen Therapy (EWOT) pairs movement with oxygen. By combining light exercise with high-flow oxygen, the E&I EWOT System is associated with supporting endurance, circulation and cellular energy, a natural complement to cryotherapy or sauna use.

The shift from wellness to bio-optimisation

Traditional wellness asks how we feel. Science-backed wellness asks how we function. Through contrast therapy, red light, cryotherapy and oxygen training, the goal is no longer passive relaxation but active restoration. It is why leading gyms, spas and performance centres now design spaces around recovery first, where heat, cold and light combine to support measurable, long-term wellbeing.

Why this matters for the industry

For wellness operators, the return is tangible: clients stay longer, book more sessions and see better outcomes. For individuals, the return is biological, associated with better sleep, steadier energy and sharper focus. Designed well, a wellness suite becomes more than a space for recovery; it becomes a system for everyday human performance.

The Ember and Ice blueprint

At Ember and Ice Wellness, we design, supply and integrate science-backed wellness systems for performance, health and longevity. Our blueprint covers every stage:

Consult: understanding your space, goals and operational needs.

Design: creating tailored sauna, contrast, cryotherapy or red light layouts with architectural precision.

Educate and support: providing training, marketing and aftercare so every system performs as designed.

Whether for private residences, hotels, gyms or recovery studios, our mission is clear: to redefine wellness through measurable results, proven by science, refined by Ember and Ice.

As we move further into 2026, the conversation around recovery, longevity and performance-led wellness keeps evolving. What was once reserved for elite athletes and Nordic bathing cultures is now becoming a defining feature of forward-thinking homes, gyms, spas and hospitality spaces worldwide. One practice sits at the centre of this shift: contrast bathing.

Rooted in centuries of tradition and now reinforced by modern science, contrast bathing is no longer a trend. It is fast becoming an essential pillar of contemporary wellness design. At Ember and Ice, we are seeing rising demand across both commercial and residential projects, driven by a desire to:

Future-proof wellness spaces

Make the most of available footprint

Deliver measurable recovery outcomes

Offer experiences grounded in science

Contrast bathing: ancient ritual, modern physiology

Contrast bathing involves alternating between cold and hot water immersion. Traditionally practised in Nordic cultures and Japanese onsen rituals, it has gained renewed attention through research into its physiological benefits. Modern studies suggest contrast therapy may:

Support circulation through vasoconstriction and vasodilation

Aid muscle recovery and reduce perceived soreness

Support nervous-system regulation and stress resilience

Enhance recovery when paired with sauna use and training

The physiology explained

Cold immersion, typically 5 to 10°C, activates the sympathetic nervous system, and is associated with supporting inflammation modulation, mental alertness and circulatory adaptation. Hot immersion, often inspired by Japanese onsen traditions at around 38 to 40°C, encourages parasympathetic activation, relaxation and increased blood flow. Alternated strategically, hot and cold exposure creates a powerful physiological reset: the body is challenged, then restored; stimulated, then regulated. This is why contrast bathing has become central to modern recovery environments.

The body is challenged, then restored. Stimulated, then regulated.
Ember & Ice Wellness

Commercial wellness: from luxury feature to core offering

For commercial operators, contrast bathing is no longer optional. Today’s members and guests are wellness-literate; they expect recovery tools backed by evidence, not aesthetics alone. Key considerations for commercial spaces include:

Future-proofing your offering with relevant, long-term modalities

Making the most of limited space in urban gyms and boutique hotels

Ensuring operational efficiency and durability

Differentiating in a competitive wellness market

From private members’ clubs to performance facilities, contrast bathing delivers both experiential value and commercial return.

Residential wellness: elite recovery at home

For residential clients, contrast bathing offers something equally powerful: a daily, private ritual. Homeowners are increasingly integrating cold plunges and hot immersion into gardens, pool houses and interior wellness suites, bringing elite-level recovery into the everyday environment. Rather than installing separate units, the market is shifting toward smarter, combined solutions.

One unit, three purposes

The next evolution of contrast bathing lies in hybrid systems. Ember and Ice is introducing a three-in-one hybrid solution that combines an ice bath, a Japanese onsen and a hot tub experience within a single engineered unit. This dramatically reduces the space required while increasing versatility: one footprint, three distinct recovery experiences, ideal for compact residential gardens and high-performance commercial spaces alike.

The Ember & Ice contrast bath collection

At the heart of this evolution sits the Ember & Ice Contrast Bath, Plunge and Hot Tub Collection, models like the Björn, Loki, Frode, Thor and Stig. Designed for durability, performance and refined aesthetics, the collection supports:

Integrated heater-chiller systems

Architectural in-ground installations

Compact above-ground units

Multi-user commercial environments

From private wellness gardens to full bath-house concepts, these systems blend Nordic craftsmanship with modern engineering. Contrast bathing is no longer a standalone feature; it is a strategic design decision.

The future of hot and cold therapy

As recovery science advances, the integration of hot and cold therapy will only deepen. In 2026 and beyond, the most successful wellness environments will not simply look impressive; they will be engineered around physiology, flow and measurable outcomes. Contrast bathing sits at the centre of that future.

Do infrared saunas get hot enough to deliver real benefits? Why the temperature number doesn't tell the whole story, and how infrared heat actually works.

The post Do Infrared Saunas Get Hot Enough? The Science Explained appeared first on Ember and Ice.

Infrared saunas have become a staple in gyms, wellness centres, longevity clinics and private homes, yet one question keeps coming up: do they actually get hot enough to work? The short answer is yes, but the temperature number alone doesn’t tell the whole story.

Infrared saunas heat the body directly, not the air around it. That’s why lower temperatures still deliver real warmth to your tissues.
Ember & Ice Wellness

The short answer

While traditional saunas heat the surrounding air to 70 to 100°C, infrared saunas use infrared light that penetrates the skin and warms your body’s tissues directly. So even at air temperatures of just 40 to 65°C, your body still experiences deep therapeutic warmth. Because the air is cooler, many people find infrared saunas far more comfortable, which allows for longer sessions and a more consistent practice.

Infrared vs traditional sauna

Both types offer real benefits, but they work in different ways.

Traditional sauna: 70 to 100°C, heats the air first, intense rapid sweating, shorter sessions, rooted in Finnish tradition.

Infrared sauna: 40 to 65°C, heats the body directly, gentle deep-tissue warmth, longer sessions tolerated, uses infrared light waves.

Understanding the difference helps you choose the right therapy for your goals.

How infrared heat works in the body

When infrared light reaches your skin, it penetrates into the tissues beneath and raises your core temperature directly, triggering a range of biological responses. Key among them is the activation of heat shock proteins, which help repair cells and protect the body from stress at a cellular level, one reason infrared sauna use is increasingly studied in relation to longevity and metabolic health. There are three main wavelengths:

Near infrared: penetrates the skin’s surface layer; associated with supporting cellular repair and skin health.

Mid infrared: reaches deeper soft tissue; associated with supporting circulation and muscle relaxation.

Far infrared: penetrates deepest; raises core temperature and supports the body’s natural sweating response.

Benefits of regular infrared sauna use

Research and clinical observation point to a range of benefits from consistent use, and they are cumulative, building over weeks and months.

Improved circulation: heat dilates blood vessels, supporting blood flow and oxygen delivery.

Muscle recovery: deep warmth relaxes muscle fibres and is associated with reduced post-exercise soreness.

Stress reduction: the warmth calms the nervous system and is associated with lower cortisol and greater relaxation.

Better sleep: regular use has been linked to deeper, more restorative sleep.

Natural cleansing: increased sweating supports the body’s own processes.

Cardiovascular conditioning: the gentle rise in heart rate provides a light cardiovascular stimulus over time.

Common questions

Do infrared saunas get hot enough to work? Yes. They typically run between 40 and 65°C, but because the heat penetrates the body directly, you still get the benefits at lower air temperatures. The key is tissue-level heating, not air temperature.

Do infrared saunas make you sweat? Yes. Even at lower air temperatures, direct heating of the body raises your core temperature and triggers sweating. Some people sweat earlier in infrared sessions because the body warms more efficiently.

Are infrared saunas safe? Used correctly, they are considered safe for most healthy people. Stay well hydrated, keep sessions within the recommended window, and check with a doctor if you have any underlying health conditions.

How long should a session be? Most last 20 to 40 minutes. Beginners should start with 15 to 20 minutes and build up as comfort improves.

How often should you use one? Many experts suggest 3 to 5 times a week for the most consistent, cumulative benefits.

Is infrared better than traditional? Neither is objectively better; they offer different experiences. Infrared is gentler and suits longer, daily sessions; traditional gives intense heat rooted in Finnish culture. Many modern facilities offer hybrid options.

A decade ago, looking after yourself meant going somewhere. To the gym. To the studio. To the clinic. Wellness was something you left the house to access: a paid-for hour, a class on the schedule, a destination on the calendar.

That model has quietly broken down.

What we used to call wellness has expanded out of the gym, away from the personal trainer, beyond the supplement aisle, and into the home. Not as a workout space, but as something more ambitious: a place engineered for the everyday rhythms of recovery, sleep, focus and long-term wellbeing.

The standard has changed.

How wellness moved from the gym into the architecture of the home, and what that means for the way we live.
Ember & Ice Wellness

From performance to longevity

For most of the last two decades, the conversation around wellness was driven by performance. How hard you trained. How much you lifted. How visible the results. The audience was athletes, gym-goers and the dedicated minority.

The conversation today is different. It’s about sleep architecture. Heart rate variability. Cold exposure. Inflammation. Nervous-system regulation. The questions being asked are quieter, more biological and, crucially, more universal, because everyone sleeps, everyone manages stress, and everyone is ageing.

What was once the domain of professional athletes has become the daily concern of architects, founders, parents and designers. The science hasn’t changed. The audience has.

Biohacking moved from the fringe to the mainstream

A few years ago, biohacking was a category for outliers: Silicon Valley engineers tracking macros with spreadsheets, podcasters fasting in red-tinted rooms. It looked, and sounded, fringe.

That label no longer applies. Continuous glucose monitors are sold over the counter. HRV is a feature on a wristwatch. Saunas, cold plunges and red light therapy are part of mainstream wellbeing conversations, not because they’re new, but because the evidence has caught up with the practice.

The mainstreaming of figures like Huberman, Attia and others has accelerated something that was already happening: thoughtful people deciding that understanding and managing their own biology is a reasonable, even necessary, part of modern life.

You no longer need to belong to a private clinic or train at an elite level to take this seriously. You just need to be paying attention.

Recovery is the new performance

The most significant shift inside wellness is also the most quiet. For years, training was the headline and recovery was the afterthought, what you did between sessions, if you remembered.

That has reversed.

Recovery isn’t what supports performance. Recovery is performance.

The current understanding, backed by the research and increasingly by lived experience, is that sleep quality, contrast bathing, sauna use, breathwork and nervous-system regulation aren’t side practices. They’re the practices.

For the home, this changes everything. A wellness space is no longer a treadmill in the spare room. It’s a sauna. A cold plunge. A red light bed. A space designed for parasympathetic regulation rather than sympathetic output. A space for slowing the body down, deliberately, day after day.

The home becomes the wellness space

There’s an architectural shift happening alongside the cultural one.

The wellness room is no longer carved out of leftover floor plan. It’s part of the brief from day one. We’re seeing it in residential design. We’re seeing it in hospitality. We’re seeing it on the drawings of architects who, five years ago, would have placed the sauna at the bottom of the priorities list.

The home gym has been quietly supplemented, sometimes replaced, by the recovery suite. Sauna, plunge, shower, decompression space. Designed not as a vanity addition but as a daily-use environment, integrated into the way the home actually lives.

This is what we mean when we say wellness, designed the way architecture is designed. Proportion, material, atmosphere. A space that integrates with the home rather than imposing on it.

The new standard

The new standard isn’t who has the best gym membership. It isn’t who trains hardest, who hits the most personal records, or who posts the most before-and-afters.

It’s who has built the conditions at home, every day, for long-term, low-key wellbeing.

It’s quieter than the old standard. Slower. Less performative. The metrics live on a watch rather than a leaderboard. The wins compound over years rather than weeks. The work is largely invisible.

But it’s also more honest about what wellness actually is. Not a class. Not a phase. A space. A rhythm. Something built into the architecture of how you live.

The standard has changed, and the home has become the place where the change is most visible.

What does the research actually say about saunas? The science of heat therapy, from cardiovascular health and recovery to longevity, and how often to use one.

The post Sauna Science: The Proven Health Benefits of Heat Therapy appeared first on Ember and Ice.

Sauna therapy is the practice of exposing the body to controlled heat, typically between 70°C and 100°C, to stimulate circulation, encourage the body’s natural repair processes and support recovery and overall wellbeing. For thousands of years, cultures across Scandinavia, Japan and Eastern Europe have used heat bathing as a ritual for health, recovery and mental clarity, and modern research is increasingly exploring what those traditions understood. Regular sauna use is now associated with benefits for cardiovascular health, recovery, stress regulation and long-term wellbeing.

Sauna bathing places mild stress on the body, similar to light exercise, and over time the body adapts.
Ember & Ice Wellness

What happens to the body in a sauna

When the body is exposed to sauna temperatures between 70°C and 100°C, several physiological responses occur. Your heart rate rises, circulation improves and the body begins to sweat as it regulates its temperature. This heat exposure is associated with:

Increased blood circulation

Activation of heat shock proteins

Improved vascular function

A raised heart rate, similar to moderate exercise

Deep muscular relaxation

Together, these responses support tissue repair, metabolic efficiency and resilience to stress.

The cardiovascular research

Some of the most compelling sauna research comes from long-term cardiovascular studies in Finland. One widely cited 20-year study following over 2,300 men found that frequent sauna use was associated with lower cardiovascular risk: those who used a sauna 4 to 7 times a week showed lower rates of heart disease and sudden cardiac events than those who used it once a week. The likely reason is that sauna bathing places mild stress on the cardiovascular system, similar to low-intensity exercise, which over time is associated with a stronger heart and more elastic blood vessels.

Heat shock proteins and cellular repair

Heat exposure activates specialised proteins known as heat shock proteins, which are thought to play a role in:

Repairing damaged cells

Protecting against inflammation

Supporting healthy protein folding within cells

Supporting immune function

In essence, they act as a cellular repair system, helping the body recover from stress, which is one reason sauna therapy is now being studied in relation to healthy ageing and longevity.

Sauna and mental wellbeing

Beyond the physical, sauna bathing has notable effects on the nervous system. Heat exposure is associated with the release of endorphins and dopamine, creating a deep sense of relaxation and mental clarity. Regular use has been associated with:

Reduced stress and anxiety

Improved sleep quality

Better mood and relaxation

Lower cortisol levels

The ritual of heat, stillness and recovery creates a powerful environment for nervous-system regulation.

Recovery and athletic performance

Athletes have used saunas for decades to support recovery after intense training. The increased circulation from heat exposure helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to muscles while supporting the clearance of metabolic by-products. Benefits many athletes report include:

Reduced muscle soreness

Faster recovery between sessions

Improved flexibility and mobility

Better endurance adaptation

This is why saunas are now widely integrated into elite performance centres, professional sports facilities and recovery clinics.

Traditional vs infrared saunas

While traditional Finnish saunas remain the gold standard, modern technology has introduced new options.

Traditional saunas run between 80°C and 100°C with dry heat from a heater and sauna stones, delivering the most intense cardiovascular and sweating response.

Infrared saunas operate at lower temperatures, between 40°C and 65°C, using infrared panels that warm the body directly, and are often preferred for longer, gentler sessions.

Both offer real benefits, and hybrid systems can combine the advantages of each.

How often should you use a sauna?

Research suggests the most significant benefits come with consistent use. Many longevity experts suggest:

3 to 5 sessions per week

15 to 25 minutes per session

Optional cold exposure between rounds

This kind of routine helps the body build long-term resilience and adaptation.

The rise of home wellness spaces

As awareness grows, more people are bringing sauna therapy into their homes. Luxury outdoor saunas, indoor wellness rooms and contrast-therapy spaces are increasingly popular in private residences, hotels and wellness clubs. Modern designs combine architectural aesthetics, advanced heating technology, smart temperature control and integrated lighting and sound. Premium outdoor cabins such as the Mira sauna range are designed to sit seamlessly in a garden while delivering a traditional Nordic sauna experience.

Sauna as part of a complete wellness system

Sauna therapy is powerful on its own, but its benefits grow when combined with other modalities. Many wellness spaces now integrate contrast bathing, cold water immersion, red light therapy and breathwork alongside sauna use, creating a system that supports both physical recovery and long-term health. Contrast therapy, which alternates hot and cold, is particularly effective for supporting circulation and nervous-system regulation.

The future of heat therapy

Saunas are no longer just a traditional ritual. They are increasingly recognised as one of the most effective natural tools for supporting cardiovascular health, recovery and overall wellbeing. As research continues, sauna therapy is becoming a cornerstone of the modern longevity movement.

At Ember & Ice Wellness, our mission is simple: to bring science-backed wellness into beautifully designed spaces that support health, performance and longevity. Explore our indoor sauna, outdoor sauna and contrast bath collections.

Sauna use is intended for general wellbeing, and research findings describe associations rather than guaranteed outcomes. If you are pregnant, have a heart condition or another health concern, speak to a qualified professional before starting.

There’s a growing movement of people taking their health and recovery into their own hands, and it starts with a simple idea: community and consistency. Whether you’re drawn to cold exposure, sauna therapy, red light or breathwork, starting your own longevity club or contrast circle can be a meaningful step for both body and mind. Here’s how to begin.

This isn’t about numbers. It’s about alignment.
Ember & Ice Wellness

Define your intention
Is your focus performance, recovery, mental clarity or long-term health? Clarity of purpose will shape your rituals, tools and community.

Start small, stay consistent
You don’t need a full wellness suite on day one. A simple setup, like an ice bath and infrared panel, or a wood-burning barrel sauna, can be enough to build powerful momentum.

Choose your rituals
Contrast therapy (alternating heat and cold), group sauna sessions, breathwork, silent mornings, decide which practices your club will be built around.

Curate the space
Atmosphere matters. Whether it’s a backyard retreat or a private studio, your space should inspire calm, connection and restoration.

Find a wellness consultant
Partner with someone who understands both the science and the experience. At Ember and Ice Wellness, we help individuals and organisations design purpose-built recovery spaces, from Nordic saunas to advanced light therapy, guiding you on equipment, layout, safety and session structure.

Invite the right people
A small, committed group creates the energy and accountability that sustains a practice. This isn’t about numbers, it’s about alignment.

Build the ritual
Consistency breeds results. Set your times, communicate your ethos and let the ritual evolve naturally.

LED light therapy has moved from clinical settings and elite sport into the heart of modern wellness. By combining science, technology and the body’s own repair processes, it has become one of the most talked-about tools for skin, recovery and everyday wellbeing. Once reserved for specialist environments, it is now widely explored for skin health, hair, cellular renewal and post-exercise recovery.

Here is where it came from, how the different colours work, and how to get the most from it.

Each colour of LED light reaches a different depth of skin, and does a different job.

A brief history of LED therapy

The therapeutic use of light dates back to ancient civilisations, where sunlight was used to treat various ailments. Modern LED therapy (Light Emitting Diode therapy) traces its roots to the 1960s, when NASA began exploring light’s effects on cellular function. Researchers found that specific wavelengths appeared to support wound healing and tissue growth in space, a discovery that laid the foundation for today’s applications. Since then, a growing body of research has explored LED therapy across skincare, sport and recovery.

Understanding the colours and their benefits

Red light (620 to 750nm)
The most widely studied, red light penetrates deeply and is associated with stimulating collagen, supporting circulation and aiding cellular repair. It is often used to help soften the look of fine lines, improve skin tone and support muscle recovery.

Blue light (450 to 495nm)
Blue light is typically used for blemish-prone skin, targeting bacteria on the skin’s surface, and is associated with calming the look of inflammation.

Near-infrared light (750 to 1200nm)
Near-infrared reaches the deepest layers and is associated with boosting cellular energy (ATP), supporting tendon and muscle repair, and aiding the body’s natural recovery.
